Bad Retail Experience

Pros

Can't think of anything to be honest.

Cons

Working at Bellevue Best Buy was one of the worst experiences I’ve had. Having worked in retail before, I knew not to have high expectations but this was the worst. The hours were terrible since they hired too many people during the holidays. You would be scheduled only once or twice a week and have to work a 9hr shift to have it even be worth it for just above minimum wage. Anyone whose worked retail knows customers can be rude, this store had no shortage of them. People would demand answers from you and would yell at you because their washing machine hadn’t arrived yet or if you couldn’t price match something to Amazon for $5-10 less (most of the time these were not even the same product). The worst thing about this store was the other employees. Truly these people do not care about you as a person and will take advantage of you. I worked multiple 8+ hour shifts with no lunch and maybe one break that I had to argue with other employees for. Not to mention, most employees didn’t make conversation outside of telling me something was wrong and took a power trip approach to managing. I guess that’s what happens when you have a bunch of 19-20 year olds running the store who think they’re important because they were promoted to “assistant shift lead”. Managers didn’t help the situation and were dismissive, but then would apologize to you after your shift because of how poorly things were run. Just don’t work here, you can find easier retail jobs with people that don’t suck.

Pros

Employee discount Above-average pay for retail

Cons

Awkward growth: For this position, the company essentially wants you to sell credit cards or memberships more than anything else since that's their main profit. While product knowledge is certainly helpful to build crediblity with your customers, you are not encouraged by leadership to develop that skill. You end up spending most of your energy trying to sell each customer one of these two things than actually selling them a product, just so you don't get a conversation and/or eventual termination from the company. Would not recommend if you're not comfortable with selling these two for a payroll, nor if you want to showcase your expertise in technology. Two-faced ethics: Leadership encourages you to 'be human' and to 'provide a solution to every customer' during training. Those same people then encourage you to lie and to even bully customers into getting a membership / credit card so that the store's numbers look good. Makes interactions with customers feel sleazy since you are encouraged to pull this off with every client you help. Not beginner friendly: While you are given some training before your first day, they don't plan anything after that. It's difficult to get someone to teach you since your coworkers are already so busy. Frankly, it feels as if no one wants to help you grow with the company; as if they don't even want to keep you considering their horrible hours. On top of leadership expecting you to be a top-performer on your very first day, you will very much be on your own both in terms of growing with the company and honing your skills.
