Pros

The best branding team in the business, probably! See more below!

Cons

The best branding team in the world would make you believe BetterUp is the best place in the world to work. A great culture, a rocket ship growth company, an amazing product… here is the catch: most if not all of it is smoke and mirrors. I joined BetterUp 2-3 years ago and have put my sweat and tears into this company. Nights, weekends and everything in between. Believe me when I said I was underpaid and overworked but I didn’t always mind it because the CEO Alexi Robichaux and CFO Vinh Le will make it known time and time over again that you’re working at a rocket ship! “You know what that means right? Equity!” That’s right! It means that all that equity that gave you will be worth a ton of money one day right? I mean they keep showing graphs about how much the company has grown and how much we’ll be worth when we IPO one day right? Here’s the thing….. Every person joining BetterUp or currently employed at BetterUp needs to know this. Your equity is worth nearly nothing. Have you ever wondered why the company provides little to no information about what your equity is worth? There was one meeting with our CFO and a lawyer last year that confused anyone in the audience but other than that nothing! I hired a CPA to figure it out for me and I felt like I was dealing with the IRS asking BetterUp’s finance team basic numbers my CPA needed to determine my equity valuation. I mean, these are basic details any company should share with employees but I felt like I was asking going to get fired for just asking them. Low and behold… my equity as a software engineer would amount to about 20k per year. Hired another independent CPA who confirmed the same figure. Alexi and Vinh, where is all that rocket ship fuel actually going if not employees? Folks don’t waste your time here.

Pros

Most colleagues are great CEO is inspiring Overall strategy makes sense People work hard for things to go well

Cons

Ryan Sonnek, CTO and current head of R&D, is psychologically abusive. He’s not straight-forward with what he wants and then blows up at people when they can’t understand his cryptic communication. He never apologizes, and appears cheerful. It’s like gas-lighting. It’s affecting a lot of people’s mental health across several teams and creating bottlenecks.

We're sorry to hear this is the experience you are having on our R&D team. Please know that we take this type of feedback seriously, and our leaders do as well. We always want to create an environment where everyone on the team has the psychological safety and support to thrive personally and professionally at BetterUp. Ideally we'd love to better understand the details of your experience so we can work together to resolve your concerns. If you’re comfortable with it, we can help you prepare for a direct conversation about your concerns with your manager or directly with Ryan. If you are willing to come speak with our People team, our (virtual) door is wide open and we're here to listen and work with you to improve your experience. Given you seem to have other positive experiences at BU, we hope you are willing to take us up on the offer to work together towards a resolution. It’s very important to us that we make BetterUp stronger, and that we do this in partnership with our employees. Either way, we appreciate your feedback in the spirit of making our organization better. - BetterUp HR

Pros

I just feel like I made the best possible choice for my life and career by joining BetterUp. I am completely in awe of how open, thoughtful, and values-driven everyone is. The posture, energy, and vulnerability folks have shown to me reminds me of how I try to show up each day, so it feels like a really wonderful fit. This onboarding experience is more than I could have hoped for!

Cons

I know when I'm reading these types of reviews, it makes me skeptical when folks say, "nothing I can think of," or "this place is a dream come true." I get it — the obvious thought is... well, something's got to be off. Truthfully, I'm more than prepared to speak my truth about professional experiences, even if that means I feel I've made a mistake trusting an organization or perhaps feel like I've been sold an experience that isn't reality. Here's the thing... I've only been here a short time, and I simply have no reason to doubt that BetterUp is actually doing what they say they will: delivering change at scale to improving individual resilience, adaptability, and effectiveness. What I can say is this: this is the most vulnerable, thoughtful, human-centered hiring and onboarding experience I've had at a company... period. And this is coming from someone who prides herself in seeking mission-driven, values-oriented organizations. Even me, with all of my research, homework, and extra-credit interviews... even I've gotten it wrong at times. But BetterUp has their attention focused on the right things. The things that make a COMMUNITY, not just an organization. The purpose of our product is to help folks flourish in every aspect of their lives so they can show up to work as their best selves. This is the cornerstone and the essence of who we are. There is ownership here. We are asked to be citizens first, before our role. The values shared here are the ones you'd hope we are all bound to and seek to embody in our cities, schools, and neighborhoods. Treating ourselves and our colleagues with respect is fundamental! Any modicum of success we hope to have starts there, and I believe wholeheartedly that folks who join this company fundamentally share the desire to live more meaningful, vibrant lives with greater clarity, purpose, and passion. So no, no cons yet. I'm just really excited to see what my next chapter here holds.
