Pros

BetterUp attracts talented, forward-thinking individuals who are passionate about personal and professional growth. Working alongside smart, driven colleagues creates a collaborative and inspiring environment.

Cons

Behind the glossy marketing and feel-good messaging lies a company riddled with dysfunction, unrealistic expectations, and a toxic veneer of positivity. Leadership attempts to propagate a culture of "radical candor," but in practice, dissenting voices are silenced, and feedback is only welcomed when it aligns with the company's narrative. If a good leader does show up, they have a very short half-life and are exited despite the months long vetting and interview cycles. The company thrives on overpromising and underdelivering, especially to customers. The strategies to offer customers unlimited coaching are based on low repeat adoption. Customers should ask what percentage of seats across all customers are used more than four times in 12 months for 1:1 coaching. Divide this by the cost per seat and see why BetterUp can afford to pay for so many celebrity endorsements. Worse still, BetterUp encourages employees to post glowing reviews to artificially inflate its reputation. The company leans on its own coaching principles to subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) persuade employees to share only positive experiences, creating a false public image that doesn't reflect the reality inside. If you’re looking for a place with authentic values, healthy work-life balance, and genuine leadership transparency, BetterUp is not it. Don’t be fooled by the polished exterior—it’s just a facade.
