Pros

I really loved working at BigCommerce for the first year. Upper management really does seem to genuinely care about employees and wants to do right by the clients.

Cons

I had two managers during my tenure at BC. The first became overwhelmed as her role grew. She was also determined to be involved with everyone and do everything that was asked of her. This of course, turned into a situation where she was incredibly stressed and passing this down to her team. She could not say no. Every request for the team got a "yes, we can do that". In any situation, the upper level leader was always right and the analyst was always wrong. To her credit, she did try to rectify the situation by hiring a middle manager in between her role and the analysts reporting to her. The person that was hired, whom I then reported to, is a nitpicky micromanager. If I didn't reply to a Slack message within 10 minutes, I'd get a text message on my personal phone. She interviewed well, but it became very apparent that despite saying that she was comfortable with the technical aspects of the job, she clearly not, because she couldn't keep up. I was also told that I'd be better at my job if smiled more, which is really a hugely inappropriate thing to say to any employee, especially a female. The company has big ideas, but lacks in execution. Most new processes are half-assed and the focus is on manual processes because their internal revenue systems can't support new automation.

Pros

• Unlimited PTO for salaried employees • Startup environment, maybe good for junior level with zero experience • Lots of ways to get involved in community • Employee Resource Groups for LGBTQ+, etc.

Cons

• Zero work life balance - Guilt tripped for taking holiday • Extremely unqualified management - Everything is on fire at all times and management cannot communicate well with employees. Management bullies and threatens employees in order to get what they want. • Company became remote bc fear of losing folks, but they still have management peer pressuring folks to come in for in person jam sessions, etc. • HR is unresponsive and will only take action if it's convenient for them. • Hourly employees are treated as highly disposable.. • Large chunk of upper management either has been at the company for their entire career or they got grandfathered in somehow (acquisitions, etc.) which converts to a horrible dynamic between management and front line workers making things happen.
