Pros

- I know this could vary by team, but my team is laid back and chill - You get to learn a lot about financial stuff (if you are open to learn anyways) especially investing and money management - Good benefits including unlimited PTO, 401k matching and boost

Cons

- Pay is not that good compared to tech companies. I wouldn't have complained if that at least increased (a little if not a lot) every year but no. It'd be the same for several years and they don't care about your life changes, inflation, etc. EVERY YEAR they say the same thing "oh it's not been that good a year", even though the earnings are good? - Promotion process is a huge mess. I saw people bootlicking senior management get promoted even though they are unworthy and some talented and hard working people ignored because they actually work and not waste time talking BS and entertaining those senior management. This kind of culture is HIGHLY TOXIC and its high time people corrected it. People have taken cue and started working less and boot licking more. Also there is no clear path or definition to promotion or any measurement scale for the criteria. Its just too abstract and they expect you to already be doing the work of the role that you are trying to get promoted to. Why would I do that when I'm not getting paid for it yet? - Developer experience sucks - you get all kind of "security" crap installed on the computers that make them super slow for developers. If you don't trust software engineers to not click on stupid spam or get virus onto the computers, why hire them in the first place? The dev process becomes SUPER SLOW because of thousands of background processes running and becomes super irritating and you lose all the remaining motivation to code. How hard is it to have different policies for developers and non developers?

Pros

-Your peers are basically your lifeline at work and become your friends outside of work

Cons

-Terrible work life balance, you are working 12-16 hour days -The culture is all about face time so you "come into work unless you are dead", people have been really ill before and still came into work because of their manager -You are expected to say yes to everything that people on other teams ask you to do and saying no means you aren't a "yes person" or a "solutions oriented person" -Nepotism is rampant! Management plays favorites in terms of who gets promotions and bonuses, it's very obvious who rises fast and who does not -The moment you are questioning how things work on the team is when you are considered undesirable and you get staffed on crappy projects -There are some managers who belittle you in front of others and you are expected to just take it -Internal mobility is impossible because you have no transferable skills and your manager will actively work against you to prevent you from leaving -Work is actually project management of Aladdin, it has nothing to do with finance or technology -People are afraid to speak out while they are still on the team because of the bad culture on this team where people are favored over others, so the repercussions are demoralising

Pros

- Startup benefits (free food, drinks, standing desks, etc) plus corporate BlackRock benefits (401k, cash bonus, parental leave) - Diverse workplace, welcoming for women and LGBT - Most people are smart and approachable, especially Bo & Jon - Engineering has invested effort to reduce tedious work - Still lots of good people left, despite a string of high performers leaving after this year's bonus - Devs frequently work with non-devs throughout the company - Management generally listens to complaints and try to correct course - Some teams allow flexible work from home arrangements - Many employees pick up better personal finance & investing habits

Cons

- Feels more like a vendor working for multiple partners rather than a true platform - Arbitrary deadlines with no flexibility on feature requirements because someone promised it to a partner - Each partner wants different features, company can't agree on how to prioritizate. Some PMs end up on projects that will never ship. - Very little flexibility to be creative due to partner constraints - Some BlackRock benefits (e.g. 401k matching) come with 3 year vesting cliff! - Corporate HR policies like promotions & raises only on annual review, no stock awards, personal trading reporting - Devs always end up doing tech support and answering questions about the product (not enough product documentation or knowledgeable PMs)
