Asset gathering behemoth

Pros

Nice office building and some good employee networking events in the office.

Cons

Focus is solely on gathering assets rather than serving the client. New products are launched just because the market is hot and they want to grab as much assets as possible, not because BlackRock is actually good at it. Many of the products have very poor performance, yet the management is focused on selling more rather than improving performance. The management team continues to drink their own kool-aid and keeps pushing salespeople. The expectations are not grounded in reality. Still, it would be fair if the same is expected from all. However, rampant politics and favoritism makes the company a murky place to navigate. If you naturally fit into the popular boys club, it might be easier for you, but for anyone else, playing politics and cozying up to the managers are more important than actually doing your job.

Pros

Inspiring, brainiac workforce. Mostly nice, straightforward people until you get to the senior circle. The HR team does a great job trying to build and foster a strong culture of constant learning and development. Great benefits and a culture driven to best the last great accomplishment. Some genuine teamwork is encouraged w/i the product ecosystem which is good for the staff and good for the firm.

Cons

Senior management trots out the word meritocracy whenever they have a chance, but most staff quickly realize they'll never be in the "inner circle" and only promoted if personally favored by them. Favoritism is rampant and expected at the top.

Pros

Blackrock has a reputation and a stake in the investment management space that is competitive. There are a few gems employed here including support staff in facilities. Nice office in SF.

Cons

Can be an extremely hostile environment under the hands of inexperienced, poorly trained managers who focuses more on how much you produce rather than your growth through training and education. Hearing managers speak to technology teams as "Purgatory" says a lot about their inability to be innovative and ruled by a select few. References to their employees as "warm bodies" and names on a excel spreadsheets with little interaction with their teams. It's a corporate factory to some degree and they expect you to comply. Most people are extremely unhappy here, but hide it because they've been imprisoned by the mentality that they cannot do better than Blackrock. There's a lot of emotional imprisonment and fingerpointing. *Be Warned* Managers watch the clock and pay close attention to the time you come and leave the office and they love to talk about the weather.
