Pros

Potential growth both horizontally and vertically within the organization; learning opportunities of different levels of the portfolio management profession (i.e., technical skills, business skills, management skills...)

Cons

Compensation structure divides groups; political and religious personal views of life of managers affect daily work; some managers look only at a very short term objectives penalizing BlackRock and BGI integration by keeping into existence inefficient codes and systems.

Pros

- Well rounded exposure to the investment mgt industry including various asset classes, investment products, diverse investor universe and varying investment strategies/objectives - Decent knowledge sharing across different investment teams - Flat organization with numerous formal and informal networks and accesible senior management - Good work/life balance

Cons

Where to begin! - Overall firm strategy is aligned to be the biggest...not the most competent or profitable - Varying degrees of expertise and competence across different investment teams in fixed income, equity and alternatives - Lack of integration between various teams/offices thereby leading to a very inconsistent team culture - Bottom of the industry compensation and terrible benefits package - Lack of operational policies, upward mobility and career opportunities

Pros

Very bright people and very good name to have on your resume. The reputation of this firm will go a long will in furthering you career.

Cons

Where to start? Culture is exclusive so if you're a non-Ivy be ready to feel like an outcast. Hours were ridiculous and not worth the average salary/bonus. After being promoted to Associate I was essentially still working analyst hours; even the bosses put in super long work days (12 hours is standard, often longer than that). Certain bosses designated to be the quasi-HR point persons in the risk group were unprofessional and often crossed boundries - any complaints will get you labeled as a wuss. There are some lawsuits waiting to happen at this shop. Competition is so cut-throat that training is often lacking (trainers doesn't want trainee to have an edge on him).
