They'll ridicule everyone but you

Pros

Some offices seem nice and the partners there seem like decent people. Same for associates and staff. You'll probably have typical biglaw gripes, but nothing major. But if you find yourself in one office in particular, you are screwed.

Cons

This criticism applies to one office in particular. There you may find a clique of partners whose behavior is atrocious. No joke is out of bounds: they ridicule gay persons, persons of peceived lower socio-economic status, disabled persons and single parents. Not abstractly, mind you, but directed at particular people (mostly hapless co-workers!). They do this behind the person's back, but in front of an audience of back-slapping sycophants. Some staff members also engage in this behavior (even openly partner-bashing to this clique), but not all.

Pros

Benefits are awesome. Medical benefits are the best I've ever experienced in my life. Paid Time off is generous for first year staff. Management in my department is extremely accessible and reasonable. There are several clearly defined ways to advance your career. Blank Rome offers a well rounded in-house training program involving advanced software and applications. Senior Management gives very clear and direct accessments of the status of the business in the economy to all staff.

Cons

Socially speaking, there are times where I've felt like an invisible man. Perhaps, this is because I'm not an attorney and the department in which I work with is some what isolated from the rest of the office. There is definate segregation between the attorneys and staffers, which is the most evident in the cafeteria and the firm picnic. I believe that most people are apprehensive about speaking to or befriending someone that they do not work with on a consistent basis.
