Typical Big Philly Law Firm

Pros

Above-average market salary; Mgt treats employees well; collegial work environment, more so than other law firms like Cozen (stay far, far away).

Cons

Like many big law firms, Blank Rome has developed into a fiefdom, where each department is like its own country - there is very little collaboration between the departments and departments are loath to refer a client to another department less that department "steal" the client.

Pros

The people I worked with were nice and I made some good friends. The generous salary is the only firm-wide redeeming quality.

Cons

Very demanding schedule; very poor benefits (no 401k match, high premiums for insurance policies); inconsistent information about forthcoming raises/bonuses.

Great past, bad present, questionable future

Pros

Good salaries, expensively furnished offices, on-site gym, some wonderful colleagues, large and convenient cafeteria, some hold-overs from the firm's admirable heritage and past culture.

Cons

Bad culture, mistrust, inequitable work assignments, lack of secretarial support, horrific word-processing support since it was outsourced to West Virginia, firm leadership that is hypocritical and dishonest in spirit.
