- if you're not a doctor - it's not going to make you rich. - opportunities in the technology space is limited -

Pros

It's a nice place to work. The real situation for scientists depends mainly from your PI. Mine is fine - I conduct independent research as my PI understood I can do it. So my position differs from post doc only by not writing grants. So I can concentrate on the research itself. My job is interesting and challenging in a good way.

Cons

The main problem - is not having enough money for a family. Doing the same stuff in a company I can get at least twice bigger salary.

job definitions for research-oriented staff can be stretched to include wide variety of experiences and work

Cons

research roles are completely grant-based with no thought to integrating research and service roles for research staff - so that each time new grant comes in new staff have to be recruited and trained instead of having local talent pool who can be invested in and developed into long-term research employees
