Pros

Good snacks, hip trendy company.

Cons

I don't want this to come across as insensitive, but management based in China was out of touch with American culture. For my time there, there was a disregard for American colleagues' perspectives. And salary was pretty lousy. Also, there were very few professional growth opportunities.

Pros

Good place to grow Good benefits Non Chinese coworkers great to work with

Cons

Chinese work culture is incredibly toxic Expectations are incredibly high with unequal compensation Constant re-orgs, rushed product launches with little support, outright discrimination against non-Chinese employees Complete disrespect of work life balance Insane "lateral" job transfers with compensation increases only considered at Perf Review cycles Here at TikTok/Bytedance it will be expected that your job WILL be your life. While the 996 culture is publicly denounced, it's pretty common to see people working 10+ hour days and it's kind of the expectation. If you do well and move up you will be offered a "lateral transfer", despite taking on more responsibility. This means you will not receive compensation increases until the next performance cycle. This means that you will be expected to perform your new, more extensive duties for free with the -hope- of receiving a good perf review and possible compensation adjustment. This is one of the single most insulting business practices of this company. ByteDance is only a good place to work if you are young, unmarried and have no kids or life outside of work. Even then, work here a maximum of 2 years and get out. This job has done more damage to my mental and physical health than a decade of service industry and labor intensive jobs. If you get hired, use them for everything they have and bail. No job is worth this.
