Pros

Flexible working environment. Great relationship with students. Abundant resources.

Cons

Not very well run. Targeted student to tutor ratio exceeds maximum promised in their employment manual. Forced parent-tutor interaction, which is also against what is stated in the employment manual.

Thank you for letting us know that you enjoy the flexible work schedule and have taken advantage of all our resources and developed good relationships with our students - it sounds like you're an amazing tutor and we really value your feedback. I'd like to make sure you have the appropriate level of support from your Center director as it relates to working with famlies and the student-teacher ratio. I look forward to talking with you and your regional leadership team to make this happen. As the new CEO, I am focused on leading the team forward to expand and grow the business with improved communication and support for our employees. This will be achieved as the team works to communicate more effectively, further develop our employees and ensure that everyone feels valued and adheres to the C2 mission and values.

Pros

--didn't require professional experience --premade coursework made the actual tutoring easy --decent wages for a recent college graduate --the actual work is rewarding

Cons

--I was told when I applied for the job that I would be working part-time hours, maybe close to full-time. I worked four hours a week, and only then if I constantly asked management for hours. --Training is not adequate-- I was expected to perform perfectly from day one, despite having no in-person training and with several aspects of the job completely ignored in training. --Despite only teaching two classes a week, management expected me to keep my schedule completely open. --I told management that I needed more hours or I would need to look for work elsewhere. Later, I saw an ad for my replacement on Craigslist. I was never informed of my termination or paid for training.

We really appreciate your honest feedback and commitment to education. Please understand that we aim to build schedules as consistently as possible for all of our teachers since that is to the direct benefit of our students. However, teachers who have more C2 teaching experience, along with those teachers who can cover more subjects, will receive more hours and more consistent schedules because they are able to support more of our students at any given time. You will be pleased to hear that we have a new Teacher Development Initiative that provides teachers with different ways to increase their pay while also providing opportunities to grow and develop with C2. We believe in our teachers and their ability to take our students toward their dreams, now and always. Thank you for your contribution.

Pros

This job provided more stability than many other tutoring positions I've had in the past. After a while, I was able to get 30-40 hours per week on a consistent basis.

Cons

Tutoring is done 3:1, with a random mix of students. Tutors are supposed to multi-task among the three students, which means that students actually only get 1/3rd of the tutoring they would get at another company. My manager was also micro-managed the choice of curriculum, even though she has no teaching experience. Her advice was sometimes horribly wrong for the student, but I had to follow it because she didn't actually take the time to listen when I advocated for the student. And then I would get in trouble when the students didn't improve their test scores... All in all, it has been a very frustrating experience. There was also a significant amount of unpaid work. We were expected to be at work at least 30 minutes before classes started, but most of us arrived an hour or more beforehand just so that we could plan lessons and make photocopies. None of this was paid time. Finally, there was an incredible amount of turnover (despite claims on their website that boast that C2 has far higher teacher longevity than their competition). Within an 8 month period, every single English teacher left and was replaced. Some of the replacements left too. The most veteran math tutor had only been there for a year and a half.
