Work/life balance is quite awful.
Company is run like the military.
Job is actually quite dangerous, you can die easily with one mess up. A guy I work with was just killed on the job a few weeks ago. It is quite common,
They expect you to do everything from paying yourself, learning on your own time, knowing the collective agreement like a lawyer, arriving early just to make sure you have your mountain of work gear equipped.. Which is fine, except that if you mess up for even a second, the first thing they want to do is fire you. You are legitimately just a number they pay to run a train.
Management polices the place for slight missteps as if they spent too much time reading Mein Kampf after getting hired.
Job takes its toll on you after a while and leaves you wishing the place wasn't so bleak and draconian with how they run it. Could easily let people have a better work life balance or take more time off when they need due to the way the place works (on call, etc.), but they choose not too. Would rather burn you down like a candle and replace you with the next guy - new, dumb, and full of energy.
