Pros

My peers on the Datacenter team were nothing short of first rate. These are some of the smartest and savviest pros with whom I have worked. The bonuses were decent. These people are a real asset to CP, an asset that management is squandering. I want to note here that the managers are also fantastic professionals – the issues that I will lay out in the “cons” section are targeted at the levels above “managers” and below CIO.

Cons

Work life balance doesn’t exist – you will work a 9 to 10 hour day in the office then 3 or 4 hours at home at night during the “change window” – working from 8 to 5 then working 9 PM to 11 or midnight on a regular basis plus working 3 or 4 weekend’s every month made a personal life an unattainable luxury – burnout is the rule of the day at CP in the IS groups. There is no career path or promotion opportunity unless you are in some mysterious inner circle. I could never get any info on promotions. Some people get mysterious promotions but there is no path for it. The appearance is that all who have been promoted have long standing relationships with a senior member of management – I guess some people just like to take care of friends. CP is forcing technical professionals to take over a month long training to be a rail conductor. This is absurd. As IT professionals we are there to support and empower the rail workers, not work on the rails ourselves. We generally do not want to participate in Hunter Harrisons efforts to undermine union labor. There are many more problems but other reviews have touched on most of the key points and I don’t want to be redundant - suffice to say it is a bad place to work.

Pros

Some of my co-workers were great - most didn't stay or are looking to leave. Great commute options to Downtown Minneapolis, but that location is probably going away so that is no longer a Pro. Bonuses - I was fortunate enough to get 2 fairly decent bonuses, but they instituted company wide expectations that were so unrealistic that employees will not be able to achieve a rating high enough to receive a bonus.

Cons

1. Zero respect for employees - CP isn't paying people enough that they can or should treat people the way they do. Work is a part of people's lives not their entire life! Management's poor planning and inability to make wise decisions shouldn't mean all staff should suffer and work around the clock to try to achieve your insane requests. 2. Highly questionable business practices - Most of the benefits that people used to decide to take a job at CP were either changed or removed completely. As an example, the vacation accrual policy before I was hired was at your tenth year you earned 5 weeks of vacation, we were all given 9 years of experience so after 1 year we should have been at 5 weeks of vacation. That policy was magically changed after the rush of hires was completed, so I ended up losing vacation when I took the job. 3. Telecommuting options - only for the favored few! 4. Vacation without taking your laptop and work phone - unheard of. 5. HR there to support the employees - HA! Not if you were going against the good old boys club, HR wouldn't even consider it! Even Payroll is so convoluted nobody can explain it - I had 5 different pay rates and I was salaried!?! How is that even possible?

Pros

The pay is about market average for Minneapolis. Benefits are very good.

Cons

Let's get something clear. When you join CP, becoming a train conductor is mandatory for all employees. This means 6-8 weeks of training, which includes classroom, field work, and train trips. For a single guy without a family, this may work OK. This doesn't work well for most people. -Most IT in Minneapolis is with the Data Center team. Let's make another thing clear.... once hired you are level 1, 2, and 3 support. Need a server rebooted at 3 AM? Get up and do it. The help desk facilitates most support calls but there is no level 1 triage or support. This is constant day and night. -Turnover in IT is very high. You're always covering other open positions because people are constantly leaving. In this case, the grass IS greener on the other side. Ask yourself why there's always open position at Canadian Pacific. Turnover in some areas is close to 50% in the past few years. -No career path. Many people worked here for 2 or more years with no mention of a promotion, or even how to strive toward one. Yet, one day you'd come in and 3 people mysteriously had "Senior" in front of their title. OK? -Leadership by fear. A lot of "this is the way it's going to be done, period"... even though the decision was made by a non-technical person. No discussion or project plans for high impact changes. Last minute decisions and a mad scramble to get it completed. Constant moving of the goalposts for processes and changes. -Work life balance. Unbelievably bad. If you have a family, this is NOT a job for you. If you're single, starting out in IT, and don't mind working 12-16 hours a day - you'll love it here. Constant expectations to be available after hours, during vacations, holidays, etc. For an emergency, this is expected in IT. For non-emergencies, unacceptable. Old mentality of needing to be in the office during the workday, even if night work is required the same day.
