      Run from KCS as fast as you can!

      pay is decent for the industry

      Management at all levels is horrible to work for. There has been a lot of very good managers fired and replaced with sub standard employees to say the least. The unions are weak don't do very much to help. every railroad i've worked for since leaving KCS has been better then them. There is alot of good employees with college degrees working in train service that can't move up into management for what ever reason. If your thinking of railroading for a career do yourself a favor ask any employee of another railroad what they think of KCS before applying.

      Pros

      Decent pay for job that requires no previous training and only a GED.

      Cons

      Work can be very fast paced with managers having little sympathy over workload. Can sometimes be long hours (12+ hours to a maximum of 18) Older employees who have worked their a long time can sometimes be very rude especially to new inexperienced employees. New employees will typically be on a "spareboard" meaning you are basically on call making it difficult to plan activities, sleep schedule etc. Work load is heavily dependent on commodity prices and needs meaning if oil tanks then expect a lay-off.

      Pros

      Good money, great insurance and retirement. For some reason, people will think you have a cool job.

      Cons

      No work schedule, always on call then gone for 40 hrs. Sleep deprivation. Employees are miserable. This insanely boring job will become your life. Your wife will hate you.
