Pros
Cabela's is a great environment for outdoor enthusiasts like hunters, fishermen, and those who enjoy shooting sports. The "uniform" is relaxed, with jeans as acceptable attire, along with an issued khaki Cabela's shirt. Cabela's has opportunities for hourly employees to earn income in addition to their hourly wages through selling their VISA club membership, Extreme Protection Plans, and a small percentage commission on sales done via kiosk for items that are not currently in stock. I have never seen this degree of opportunity to earn more at any other retailer.
Cons
When sales are down, hours get cut, but the workload stays the same and/or increases. Part-timers suffer first, and many end up being cut to 8 hours per week. Customers are upset that service levels are down because the store is under-staffed, so managers constantly get beat up by customers. Managers are also reduced to cashiers and phone-answering service and do not have time to be strategic. That makes for a LONG 50+ hour work week!
