Pros

You get to work around lots of outdoor equipment. Some discount on certain products, but not much.

Cons

No matter how much you advise management of the products the customers come in asking for, the products never get ordered. Management NEVER asks the outfitters their opinion on anything. There is a LOT of experience with their bottom line employees as many are retired from other professions but they never tap into this valuable FREE resource. They couldn't care less what the sales people think about how to increase sales and customer satisfaction. They expect you to be a know it all in all areas of the store. They are constantly hounding the outfitters to get more folks to open a Cabela's credit card account. The outfitters hate it! They fail to realize that we are in a recession and many people already have a card or don't want/need another card. Cabela's took away their great discount about 2 years ago for the sales people on the bottom of the ladder. But management kept theirs. In fact, managers get products at cost. The discounts now are minimal and you can usually find the same product at Wal-Mart or Amazon for less. They don't care about your work schedule. They give you the hours that fit their schedule and that may be 6 hours in the morning on Monday, then 7 hours in the afternoon and evening on Tues. Then one day off. Then work one day. Then another day off. Sometimes you won't work for 2 weeks, then they have you come in on a Sunday from noon to 6 pm. Screws up your whole day. If the schedule changes after it's been posted, they do not call you to notify you. Asset protection watches the employees much more than they look for shoplifters.

Pros

- Good culture...people here are kind, helpful and passionate about hunting and fishing - Small town life can be great for those wishing to raise a family - There really is no other place you can work where people are excited when you show off your latest firearm from the store

Cons

- Career growth depends entirely upon your management...if they're not going anywhere, you're not going anywhere - Management can be short-sighted about career growth and technology. Oftentimes it is all about up-front cost versus long-term cost. - There is a giant disconnect between the business and IT. It causes frequent political rifts. - If someone gets upset at you personally, they have the ability via the good ol boy system to take it out on you professionally.

Pros

Being surrounded by people who have same passion for the outdoors as yourself is great. Also, getting to be in an environment you have a passion for is a very rewarding aspect.

Cons

It is retail. There are constantly challenges with balancing time and getting your work accomplished. With it being retail and with having so many employees there are issues with malcontents and having to not let them dissuade you or your quality of work.
