Pros

As a Principal Software Engineer at Calix, Inc., I’ve had the privilege of working at a company that not only leads the telecommunications industry but also genuinely invests in its employees. Calix specializes in delivering software platforms, systems, and services that empower broadband service providers, and it’s exciting to be part of a team helping shape the future of connectivity. With a strong emphasis on value-add from every department—R&D, engineering, customer success, sales, TAC, and beyond—this is a workplace that thrives on collaboration and balanced contributions, creating an environment where everyone’s efforts matter. One of the things I appreciate most is the freedom to innovate. In my role, I’ve seen firsthand how Calix encourages fresh ideas, whether it’s enhancing products like the Calix Broadband Platform—which simplifies network management for service providers—or contributing to cutting-edge solutions like the GigaSpire systems that elevate smart home and business experiences. The company is constantly exploring new avenues and markets, with offerings like the AXOS Network Innovation Platform driving its dominance in the access network space. This forward-thinking approach means there’s always scope for professional growth, no matter your role. Calix’s leadership, with a strong CEO and CTO at the helm, sets a clear vision that inspires confidence. Their focus on expanding into new markets and rolling out innovative products makes this an exciting time to be here. The company rewards initiative and hard work generously—something I’ve experienced personally. As someone who contributes to technical advancements, I can say Calix values its employees’ efforts and ensures they’re recognized, both through compensation and opportunities to take on bigger challenges. Beyond the work itself, Calix stands out for its employee-centric culture. From robust healthcare and mental well-being support to flexible work-from-home policies and recreation funds, the management and HR teams prioritize our needs. This balance of productivity and care is rare. Whether you’re in engineering tackling complex problems or in customer success ensuring clients thrive with solutions like Calix Cloud analytics, you’re supported by a structure that fosters both personal and professional growth. For job seekers, I’d strongly recommend considering Calix. It’s a company with a promising future, backed by innovative products and a culture that rewards contribution. Look at the full picture—growth opportunities, supportive policies, and a chance to work on impactful technology—and you’ll see why it’s a standout choice. After my time here, I can confidently say it’s a place where you can build a meaningful career.

Cons

As a smaller player compared to FAANG giants, Calix sometimes faces the challenge of balancing innovation with the cost of attracting top-tier engineers. While it strives hard to compete, it occasionally overextends to secure talent, which can stretch resources thin. The company invests heavily in employee perks like free transport, breakfast, lunch, and dinner—which is fantastic for work-life convenience—but some might argue this could be redistributed as direct monetary benefits, though it’s a matter of preference. Minor drawbacks include occasional process hiccups typical of a growing company and limited brand recognition compared to tech titans, but these rarely impact day-to-day work or career growth.

Pros

Most teams at Calix have a relaxed, people-first culture.

Cons

They offered me 20k under the range posted for the job After layoffs I was expected to complete 4 times as much on call (team of 3 expected to cover 24/7 support) with no additional compensation Poor documentation and testing practices Very inefficient development/release process (but I think it’s improving slowly) Manager/team specific cons: Management will sometimes call me 7/8 pm for non urgent topics that could be discussed the following day. Poor communication. No development plan/ assistance on my career goals

Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad to hear that you have experienced our ‘people-first’ culture as we take great pride in the environment that we create for our employees and the awards that we’ve subsequently won for championing individual and team success. Employee well-being is important to us and we encourage all leaders to respect personal time outside of ‘normal business hours’, though in a global organization, that can be challenging. We’re mindful of the current team’s capacity and are actively recruiting for additional team members to ensure that we have the resources needed to meet our strategic priorities. It sounds like we’ve missed the mark in a few areas regarding team / functional leadership and will pass your feedback along to the team. We appreciate you taking the time to provide your feedback and ‘make us better’ – we care about your experience and your overall wellbeing and would invite you to connect with your Talent and Culture Business to discuss your feedback in more details.
