Pros

There are many things to like about working at Caltech. I worked on the LIGO project and found the people to be excellent to work with and very intelligent and talented. The project itself was a constant source of interesting technologies and challenges. Overall the campus is beautiful.

Cons

The office facilities where I worked were seemingly out of the 70's and in need of refurbishment. It was not a problem but not particularly nice either. There are some newer building which are nicer and there are some older buildings which have a ton of character.

Pros

I have been fairly happy with what Caltech has to offer. The campus provides a wealth of opportunities, is much less bureaucratic than other universities, and Pasadena is a great city to be in. If you have a good advisor, there's a lot you can do.

Cons

Teaching quality is highly variable and there's a lot of terrible teaching--for your graduate courses, you will often be better served by learning the material on your own. There are also some pretty terrible advisors--always be careful of who you agree to work for.

Best place to earn a PhD. Awesome people to work with and great place to live.

Cons

Until you get your PhD, don't expect to have a life.
