Pros

Work life balance: Hybrid workplace. Unlimited sick time. Unlimited personal time. One month sabbatical after 5 years. Generous vacation time. Flexible work hours. Beautiful office in Boston easily accessible by T. Free lunch daily. Fully stocked kitchens with free snacks. Commuter benefits to offset the cost of commuting by T or parking. Awesome coworkers who are always happy to help you. The company is a leader in the industry and is actively growing. Top performers are rewarded with promotions and President's club trips. Everyone is paid fairly based on a comparison with similar roles in the market. Within three years, my department had two raises to keep pace with the market. You will not find a person in your department who has the same role and the same level who is being paid a different salary than you.

Cons

Sometimes we move quickly when we launch a product and have to figure out processes to support the product as we go. More advanced planning would be helpful.

Going strong 3 years in

Pros

I've been at CarGurus for 3 years now and appreciate it more each year. Leadership puts a lot of thought and care into the decisions they make and it shows in the policies and perks (pretty generous IMO), and how they manage change (respectfully, transparently). The Boston office has sweet amenities and views that make being on-site truly enjoyable. People are genuinely nice and helpful, and a steady stream of events gives folks a chance to meet. Because of these (and some pretty fun/active Slack channels), I have a strong network well beyond my own team. I was initially concerned I'd have to be a "car person" to work here but that is not true at all. Though I have come to understand and respect the "business" of cars in my time with CG, it is definitely a tech company first, and being smart, collaborative, engaged, etc. is way more important than the car thing (though there are some car people too, and they are super helpful if you have a repair or purchase question related to your own car)

Cons

60% in-office will be tough after being 40% for so long but I know it's more the norm now and better than at some other places. Plus it's a very flexible 60%—you can use that time how you want as long as it works for your manager and team.

Happy 3 years as a Guru! We’re so glad to hear you’ve had a positive experience and are enjoying all the perks and amenities our Boston HQ has to offer. You're right that we're a tech company and car knowledge is optional, but there's plenty of it in our #social-cartalk Slack channel if you need advice. We also agree there is a lot of flexibility built into our hybrid model and hope you've been making the most of it to balance your time in and out of the office.

Pros

- Priorities are set intentionally which is far from the early start up mindset of "everything is a priority" - You can room to experiment with new technology through dedicated quarterly days - When there are complaints, it seems like generally management tries to address them in good faith - Really great and thoughtful group of engineers with particularly strong DevX and Platform teams that really remove roadblocks in the development/deploy processes - Heavy investment in tooling for engineers - There are lot of great benefits like catered lunches, a coffee bar, and a mix of cash and stock bonuses based on performance. There are a number of perks that I've never had in other companies and I'm constantly still discovering new perks

Cons

- Teams can feel pretty silo-ed - Compared to previous companies, there tends to be less collaboration, you really have to take it upon yourself to engage with others
