I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the kindest people here. Many of the engineers who have stayed have clearly weathered a lot and bring a great deal of understanding and flexibility. Working fully remote lends itself well to a good work-life balance, but it’s nice to have the option to go into office in one of their hub cities.

Cons

Software engineering was often seen more as an IT support function by leadership, with concerns about quality or sustainability often sidelined in favor of rapid feature delivery and bugfixes. The department had limited agency; while direct managers were generally empathetic, they lacked either the authority or willingness to address broader cultural and technical issues. The “unlimited” vacation policy came with an unspoken expectation of restraint, and advancement opportunities seemed tied more to tenure than performance. Additionally, I was hired at a lower seniority level than the position I applied for, without much explanation, though at the time the role still fit my needs.
