Pros

Work life balance Remote work

Cons

It’s very clear management has their favorites. There are constant changes of systems, resources and support teams, and when the employees express their frustration with the changes Michael Hansen blames the human resistance to change, rather than listening to the actual concerns. The most recent change is a huge layoff/restructuring of the entire sales organization. The Investment team that came in has changed Cengage for the worse. The company culture that made the lack of salary worth it has been dwindling down to nothing and the morale shows it.

Pros

Strong peer level culture. Colleagues are supportive, collaborative and genuinely try to help each other succeed despite ongoing challenges. Meaningful mission focused on education and workforce development. Well-known brand.

Cons

Ongoing layoffs and job insecurity. Frequent, incremental layoffs have created a constant sense of instability and low morale. Erosion of compensation and benefits - gradual reductions in benefits and overall value of compensation. Lack of clear direction from upper leadership. Decreased trust in leadership and employees feel less valued compared to earlier years. High stess and burnout environment due to the uncertainty combined with increased workload due to the layoffs make it harder to maintain balance.

Cengage Response

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I appreciate the recognition of Cengage’s peer culture, collaboration, mission, and brand. Those strengths matter and are important to preserve. I also hear the concerns about uncertainty, workload, trust, and organizational change. As we look ahead, our focus is on creating greater clarity around enterprise priorities, strengthening leadership expectations, and aligning our operating model and talent strategy to support healthy growth, stronger customer outcomes, and our mission to advance education. We may not be able to eliminate all uncertainty, but we can be clearer about direction, more disciplined in how we lead, and more intentional in how we support the people doing the work. Thank you again for the feedback. It is an important input as we continue building a stronger and more focused Cengage. -Kamilah Thomas, Chief Human Resources Officer
