Pros

There is a lot of support for teachers. The school focuses on growth, not absolute ability, so new teachers can learn in a supportive environment. Coaches observe teachers weekly and provide feedback that teachers can implement immediately. The majority of lesson plans are already planned for teachers, so teachers can focus on execution and data analysis. There is very little unstructured time, so the day moves very smoothly. SBCCS has very high expectations for both scholars and staff. Scholars are challenged academically and behaviorally – they follow tight routines that maximize work time. The school culture has also improved greatly over the years. The environment is supportive and staff are there for the scholars.

Cons

At times, there is a large workload and/or long hours. However, the workload has improved over the years. School administrators are working hard to limit demands on teachers so teachers can focus on their scholars. All work that staff does is purposeful and directly leads to scholar success.

Thank you for such a thoughtful review! You were spot on in so many ways. We work very hard to ensure our teachers are free to teach by taking a lot of the non-instructional tasks off their plates. This is something we will continue to work at and improve. And yes, our hours are long. The school day is 8:00-4:30 for students (earlier for breakfast) so most teachers end up working about 55 hours a week. Again, we think the results for students make the time spent worth it and are so thankful for the team we’ve assembled to do this incredible work. Thanks again for your feedback!
