Pros

You’re around other passionate people

Cons

You are quickly blindsided with needing to hit what are essentially sales quotas if you want to make anything over a fraction of minimum wage. Your labor is completely undervalued and taken advantage of, as is unfortunately so often the case in NGO environments. Turnover is unbelievably fast because conditions are so miserable. Only take this job if you are truly desperate and need a quick resume booster.

Pros

* Nice Management * Great Cause * Decent Pay if you put in the work

Cons

* Not enough safety precaution for black/brown and female canvassers going door to door in predominantly white and conservative neighborhoods. I am a black woman who was consistently assigned to charter these neighborhoods at nighttime, without a flashlight and it was one of the scariest jobs I've ever done. One time, a woman literally screamed bloody mary when she opened the door and saw me standing there with my little clipboard, because her husband was pulling in the driveway at the same time and she thought we were all going to kill her. Situations like that can lead people to reach for their rifle on impulse and point or shoot if they really feel in danger. And honestly since I was constantly alone in the dark, any man could have very easily pulled me into his house and done whatever he wanted to me and nobody would have known where I was. Thankfully it never happened because I quit after the 3rd day. The management (also canvassers) were a couple of middle aged white men so they never have to even bat an eyelash about things like this for themselves (or at least they are less vulnerable in these situations)... but I would have felt so much safer if one of them were walking with me, or if they split Canvassers up into pairs like they did in training.
