In San Francisco, the morale has plummeted. There were many ups and downs in my tenure at ClearSlide, but most recently was without question the lowest point. Some of this is the result of a new management org being installed within the last year, all good changes on paper but it has resulted in a very high amount of attrition due to mismanaged expectations.
A lot of the problems on the sales side stem from the fact that until very recently, there was not an effective marketing team. ClearSlide has gotten to the position it's in through sheer outbound sales effort. It's produced some of the best sales people in SF/SV, but the challenge now is finding accounts to go after. One can spend 2 to 3 hours prospecting, and only find 1 or 2 accounts that are worth pursuing. Often times, the accounts have said "no" within the past month or two, or have had upwards of 10 reps aggressively pursuing in the past year or two. Recognition for rep is often times random, with many playing favorites. Overall a bunch of great people but a negative environment with lots of complaining and pointing fingers, accountability has gone downhill.
The truth is, the sales team has done an outstanding job putting ClearSlide in the position it's in, but it desperately needs marketing to fill the gaps because there is absolutely no more low or mid-hanging fruit to go after, and few accounts that have not been torched.
Churn is a constant concern, there's no impact to the sales team because reps hand off accounts to an AM / client services team, but often times I felt the accounts I closed and the relationships I built went downhill because of mismanaged expectations, gaps in the product, or lack of successful implementation. To continue to scale successfully, the product needs to be more intuitive. Sharp and tech-savvy users can pick it up, but overall it's not the simplest product to learn, let alone change your ingrained habits to use.
The new product team is making great progress on improving the platform, but the changes are long overdue and will continue to take time.
