A Great Company for Personal Growth

Pros

I have never been pushed so hard in any company I have worked for. Start ups are not for the faint of heart, but I think the CEO is probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. She will listen to your problems, support you and encourage you when you need help and is always pushing you to do your best work. I have really enjoyed the personal growth I have made so far and look forward to a year from now to see how much further I have come.

Cons

There are definitely things that could always improve in a start up, but I think one of things that could be better is training. Training goes a long way and without it, it is hard to gauge if an employee is excellent or just okay.

Challenging But Enjoyable Work

Pros

The work we do is very rewarding and the industry is a meaningful one. We get to see the results of our efforts very quickly. Everyone here is also challenged to do better than they've ever done before so the opportunity for personal growth is through the ceiling. The COO/CFO challenges us to not only live up to our company values in all of our work but also to push ourselves to always deliver high standards. The opportunities to learn here are plentiful.

Cons

There is a strong startup culture that isn't a fit for some. The company is entirely remote, which is more pro than con but the company is still trying to develop a culture and identity so the remote workforce magnifies that need. It is also difficult to know whether you're meeting the high standard expectations at times.

Pros

One of the best learning experiences I’ve had in my career thus far. The team is deeply customer-focused, open-minded and humble. There is a refreshing commitment to pushing the business forward and thinking through decisions from first principles. This is a fantastic place to work if you are curious, have a growth mindset and are intellectually honest. Genuinely candid feedback is common, so if you are able to filter and digest that feedback in an egoless way, then you will learn a great deal. The team is lean and values experimentation, both of which create space for those driven to have a profound impact on our customers. If you draw energy from that and are seeking that, then this is a good place for you. I’m also not sure if I’ll work on another problem that has this much of a burning customer need in the rest of my career -- couple that with the fact that we have an opportunity to make real change in the communities we’re serving creates another energy source that will always be there to draw from.

Cons

We are in the awkward “adolescence” phase that is commonplace in high-growth startups. If frequent change, fast pace and lack of process sounds unnerving to you, then this might not be a great fit. We are also not a very “context-push” company, so I’d consider that in your decision as well -- if you the idea of digging for truth makes you nervous or hesitant, then this also may not be a great place for you. We can definitely improve our cross-functional camaraderie (ie compensate for our globally distributed nature) and communication, but once again I’d bucket that as not atypical when it comes to high-growth startups.
