Great Company with a Great Future

Pros

Each office has their own individual quirks and culture which makes the working environment warm and welcoming. The hierarchy is very flat which nice and perhaps unusual for a company this size. What really makes a good company are the people and the company culture - not what you are paid. If you're in it for the money, this is the wrong company for you. New ideas are welcomed with open arms in this company, managers are supportive of their employees in their careers, and continuing education is highly valued.

Cons

Nothing in particular. It will be interesting to see where the new leadership will take us in the next 6 months.

Thanks for the comments. Regarding pay, we are continually benchmarked by the industry as we recruit people from the marketplace. We have to be competitive to survive. One of the biggest factors to consider when comparing engineering firms is whether overtime is paid or not. This has a huge impact on employees’ take-home pay, the Company’s business model, and on morale . At Coffman Engineers we compensate people for each hour worked. We think this is the right thing to do for people, so please take it into consideration when comparing salary. As far as females in upper management, this is very important to us and a continual work in progress. As an affirmative action employer, we are committed to maintain a diverse employee population throughout the company, including women. We want and need diverse perspectives influencing our company in order to continue to grow a healthy, sustainable business. We are excited to have recently added our first female director to help guide us at the board level. Some of our engineering departments are managed by women, as well as our corporate HR . We have a deep bench of upcoming talent which will afford us the opportunity to increase the number of women in the upper levels of management. - Dave Ruff, President

Pros

Coffman has a strong vision and model based on Dave Coffman's entrepreneurial and progressive ideas. Benefits (PTO/Comp time/401K/insurance), personal growth opportunities, recognition, employee evaluations, and work environment are good and management continually looks to improve them. I like that each office operates as it's own business allowing decisions to be made locally. I believe this is a benefit for clients and directly benefits the projects and who we are able to work with. Coffman consistently re-evaluates programs/benefits and I appreciate the effort to find the best option for employees. They aren't afraid to spend resources to provide the right benefits, programs, and supplies (new computers, technology, equipment) if it provides greater benefit to the employee. There are lots of opportunities to grow here and work with great people. We work hard, but there are also lots of fun company sponsored activities. Company is mid-size, but has the programs, organization, and opportunities like many large firms.

Cons

Medical premiums have gone up in Hawaii and company wide, I think this is true for most employers since Healthcare reform. Otherwise, don't have much else to complain about. Very happy with my job and in my office.

Thank you for your thoughtful words about our company. We do make a concerted effort to keep the culture in the forefront of our minds and decision making. I just met with all of the GM's and we discussed the culture at Coffman as being one of our key differentiators, so we spent time defining it and strategized about how to perpetuate it. The leadership is committed to "keep it up" as you say. Regarding medical premiums, you are right. Everyone is experiencing increases and unfortunately it doesn't appear to be improving. We can't control the overall market forces, but we do not assume that it is all out of our control. We are trying to shape our total benefits package to increase awareness about how our individual decision making can affect future cost impacts. We also expend a lot of energy each year to provide the best benefits possible. We will be applying more creativity in the future to address this concern. Your input is welcome and needed. Please talk to a person on the benefits committee. - Dave Ruff, President

Pros

Large company with small company culture. They work really hard to keep personalities in mind when hiring therefore ensuring very cohesive teams and a family oriented environment. Their work ethic extends all the way up into upper management and they lead by example on a daily basis. They also make time - and prioritize - fun. Their projects are diverse and interesting - they're excellent and making sure their employees stay up to date in the latest design information and software and make everyone feel like an important part of the team.

Cons

The ups and downs of the consulting business can get tiring - but this isn't the fault of the company but rather an industry downfall. Coffman does a great job at allowing comp time during busy times and encouraging the use of accumulated comp time during downswings.

Thank you for your comment about our small company culture and family feel. We are a healthy company and as such we are growing. So we are focused on keeping the small company feel as we get bigger. One of the keys to maintaining this part of our culture is the supporting role of our corporate structure as opposed to a controlling role. You're right that the industry we work in is pretty intense. The construction industry is fast paced and deadline driven. But as you stated our overtime and comp time benefits allow the customization between the immediate reward for extra effort and future reward in paid time off. Thanks again for your comments. - Dave Ruff, President
