Great Place to Work!

Pros

Medium sized consulting engineering company with a solid track record, employee owned, excellent company culture, and opportunities for advancement. Coffman Engineers feels more like a family owned business with the security of a larger corporation. Diverse market sectors and work types prevent against individual market sector downturns providing more job stability. I have never stayed at a company more than 3 years. This is my 14th year at Coffman. I plan to stay until retirement. Caring and responsive leadership spawned by the founder's vision of a growing company that is not bogged down with unnecessary rules, bureaucracy and drama.

Cons

None that I can think of!

Our culture is our secret sauce and Dave Coffman is the master chef! Dave is not only my mentor, but he is a great friend. This positive company culture is us and will continue to be promoted (and exhibited) as you suggest. Thank you for being a fellow guardian of our culture. With team members like you, we can grow and still have this great culture that is so dear to us. Thank you for your 14 years. Dave Ruff - CEO/President

Pros

Coffman's culture and most of the people are great to work with. They try to take care of the employees.

Cons

But.... The pay isn't as great as other companies out there. This is where it's hard for Coffman to keep staff.

I keep hearing this and we are continuing to evaluate. We have to remain competitive and adapt to your marketability. Tough balance. And unfortunately in your case it looks like we didn't measure up. In your evaluation of pay, please make sure you are comparing apples to apples (meaning total comp and culture). Our business model is quite different from those firms that don't pay overtime. As a result our pay tends to be lower. However, if you are now purely salaried, please compare your hourly pay rate based upon your total hours worked. You may find that it is not so different. With the addition of a positive culture, we may just tip the scales. Just a thought. I wish you all the best. Dave Ruff - President

Pros

The people are fun and professional, and extremely willing to help. Collaboration between disciplines is handled very well and is pushed to happen by management in a positive way. Benefits are typical, except health care is high deductible backed by health savings accounts that Coffman contributes to. Orca pass is covered at 50% if you are a transit rider, and 401k has excellent matching. Coffman is also very flexible with time off as you need it.

Cons

The high deductible insurance takes a while to catch up with through the HSA, but eventually it pays off in the long run. Excess can be invested similar to a 401k system.

Thanks for your comments. The high deductible plan in conjunction with an HSA is designed to work well. But you are right, you really need to save in the years that you are healthy so you have the buffer set aside to cover the deductible in the years where you are not so fortunate. Depending upon your life circumstances this can be a challenge, but if early on you are able to save up the amount of your deductible and then continue to do so year after year, it is possible to avoid those moments that create havoc with your budget. We are encouraging everyone to save, save, save, and we are contributing funds to help. Now of course, the system may be changed again with our new administration.
