Pros

Coffman Engineers really cares about it's employees. I have seen multiple examples of the company pitching in to help family situations with health emergencies. This has included helping people to work from home or work remotely as well as caring financially. Some people with families work reduced hours. Many companies turn their 401(k) over to mutual fund salesmen but Coffman provides a simple low fee 401(k) with enough options to diversify. I have witness the leadership make the right decision for a client and public safety rather than making the short-term profitable decision. The culture here is to provide high quality engineering services and people are proud of their work. I feel most people work here because they are really "into it," meaning they are very engaged in their projects and enjoy solving the engineering puzzle. The ability to get overtime pay and use comp time for flexibility is great. Most companies do not offer that. The company contributes matching funds to HSA and 401(k) plans for the employees.

Cons

Consulting engineering is not for everyone and that is true at Coffman Engineers. People cannot float along. In-fighting is not tolerated which in general means that it is a peaceful workplace but some personalities just will not fit. Project work can require working extra hours and a lot of flexibility, but the company is flexible in return. Work hours are not directed but I find that the people here work themselves very hard. Insurance benefits are not as generous as at big multinational companies but the company has worked hard to shop for good insurance rates..

Thanks so much for your list of "Pros". It is always encouraging to hear that we are getting some very important things right. You mentioned that in-fighting is not tolerated and I am glad that value is being accurately represented throughout our organization. In some organizations you can elbow your way to the top and manipulate in order to gain recognition. That is the antithesis of who we are. As you inferred, teamwork and team success are the measures that we use in deciding about a new hire and also to determine if someone is a long term fit. If someone thinks they are going to get noticed by running over the top of people, you may as well apply to a different company. Inspire people to follow you, and the sky is the limit. Thanks again for your comments. As far as your specific advice, you have identified an issue that is becoming more and more prevalent. We have made some changes, but we have some more brainstorming to do in order to come up with a program that achieves the retention you identified. Dave Ruff - President

I see that your comment is labeled "former employee". I hope that your life circumstances will afford the opportunity to come back and join us. As far as salary, we do our best to remain competitive while balancing company health and avoiding a hire/fire culture that comes with an unstable business model. Dave Ruff - President

Pros

The leadership here is both reasonable and talented. The work environment has a brisk but enjoyable pace. I am hopeful about the numerous opportunities to explore here.

Cons

Apparently there is a 20 word minimum and I cant come up with one. Not a single one. Seriously.

I am glad to hear that you are having a positive experience at Coffman. This is anonymous, but if you ever come up with a con (even if less than 20 words), feel free to drop me a note. I would appreciate your input so we can continue to improve. We are trying our best to protect our culture as we grow. The management team is currently developing clarity around our culture so we can protect it uniformly. Thanks for being a joint protector of our culture. - Dave Ruff, President
