Pros

It’s a way into the industry, training is provided. For connections. There can be really strong camaraderie. The dogs are truely special.

Cons

Depending on your location, management can really suck. We were hired “part time” working 50+hs per week months on end. There is a promissory note of $20,000 for your training. To scare you into staying a full year. While pay is over minimum wage, it is based on the region you are in, and is still not a livable wage. Training with your dog is takes months, but you are left feeling unprepared when on duty. Regulations are constantly changing and company just wants the customers happy. They want you to clear cargo as quickly as possible, and encourage you to brake regulations to do so. If anyone gets caught, it will fall on the handler.
