Pros

The autonomy is great. The freedom to plan your day and route is, and can be, very beneficial. It's definitely what I enjoy most.

Cons

Management expectations and "quotas" are unreasonable, at best, especially if you are on a route that is primarily lower income. The pay structure benefits the company more than the employees. It's set up like a commission, this benefits the company when the hourly "supervisors" are requiring you to stay late to call customers to schedule a service. You're not getting paid for that time spent calling customers. You are not only a Technician, but you're also a secretary, debt collector and salesman for Cooks. If your organization skills are great and you enjoy a job with some freedom then Cooks might be a good fit. Personally I think their expectations are a bit unreasonable, the pay doesn't match the workload, and the company itself is a bit too "old fashioned" for my liking. Cooks is stuck in the 1950's, the pay doesn't match the workload and there's definitely something nefarious going on with how the pay structure is set up, I don't quite trust it. I'm sticking it out for right now, but the moment a better opportunity presents itself I won't hesitate to abandon ship.

Pros

If you put in the extra work and overtime there are opportunities to pick up extra work from other technicians routes who cannot finish their route before the end of the month. You work on your own and have your own work truck which you drive home at the end of your work day. Getting sales leads can potentially get you commission if the sales team sells the lead.

Cons

Service calls can complicate your workday and put you behind on your route, making it difficult to pick up extra work and sometimes to even finish your own route. When other technicians or supervisors work your stops you lose the commission for those accounts. Months that you take vacation or sick leave your pay will be hit unless you manage to finish your route, which can be very difficult depending on how much time is taken off.
