Pros

I've got some really great coworkers, my research work is always interesting, and I have broad independence for how I pursue research goals. Also I was surprised by just how much I feel like some of my work matters. Improving efficiency sounds like a matter of monetary value only, until you realize that with a glass company is means saving enormous amounts of energy and hazardous chemicals.

Cons

Part of the reason I joined Corning it's because the benefits were supposed to be excellent and they have a reputation of a slow and steady approach towards employee retention with reliable rises. Since joining 2.5 years ago though, insurance benefits have taken hits, and between inflation and a pay freeze one year, I've taken an effective paycut since I started. Management has also become increasingly dysfunctional and a series of poorly thought out layoffs at the beginning of 2024 have had serious cascading effects.
