Mid Career at Sullivan Park: Emphasize politics

Pros

At corporate research Sullivan Park, the resources are deep, the opportunities can shape the world. Lots of very smart people and capital to act. Fast pace. Lots of training available.

Cons

It is well known that mid-career hires have the most difficult time. There is an "inner circle" which has vested interest in their roles. Work is often in "silos" while lip service is given to broad cooperation. Many personal meetings must be conducted before any group meeting. Group meetings are a ratification of decisions made behind closed doors. The old culture of caring for people seems to have changed to the typical management by quarterly results.

Pros

Very successful company, great at innovating to take advantage of emerging markets and inventing new products, technology and applications. This is a company that knows how to weather economic storms and market changes. Tremendous opportunities for white males - Corning grooms its white males for leadership roles with mentoring, global assignments, and social interactions.

Cons

When I was there Corning did a poor job of mentoring and developing people outside of the Corning Valley (Corning NY). In the G&A areas If you were not in the valley you felt like a second class citizen. I think Corning is short sighted and does not take advantage of many talented employees (80% outside of the valley vs 20%in the valley). As to diversity (culture, ideas, gender, citizenship (non-US), and ethnic background) one only has to look at the make-up of corporate leadership in NY (executive, senior managers and dept heads) - the optics are a true reflection in my experience and opinion.
