Pros

You'll get a lot of exp very fast if you want it. If you don't want to get exp, then don't go to dish...its best for a person looking to break i to a new field either someone out of college or someone who wants to switch from let's say operations to marketing.

Cons

This is all gonna sound like im a disgruntled employee, but i spent almost 5 years at dish and was happy i think most of the time. In hindsight i should have left sooner.. Here goes... People are generally unhappy in corporate. They try to be happy and are all generally good people. But culturally its a bit backwards due to Charlie's presence. You don't matter. Charlie does. If he's got an opinion it's not likely you're gonna change that old man's mind no matter what the evidence to contrary is. That leads to some questionable strategies.... If you want to climb -espeically to director- your results don't matter. Your time in the seat and your demonstrated loyalty to the company do. You can't be a total screw-up, but you can be a notch above that and do just fine if you jump on Charlie projects quick enough and act like dish and cpaw is amazing. Some policies honestly seem like they are created to frustrated people. I'm not sure if that's by design, its kinda sick that it may be, but Charlie is pretty anti social dude.

Pros

Opportunity – DISH took a chance on me long ago, and I’ll always be grateful. I‘ve been promoted many times and given many opportunities (some above and outside my title!). I learned valuable skills, made a livable-ish wage, and was involved in fun, exciting, and fulfilling projects. I have the career I do because of my time at DISH. Team – Peers, direct managers, directors, and even VPs were excellent. Just about everyone, no matter the level or role, felt very approachable and pleasant to work with. I don’t know how common it is for an individual contributor to meet regularly with SVPs or be able to walk up to a C-level executive and have an informal conversation, but that sort of thing happens here.

Cons

A Scrooge – DISH is an expert in penny-pinching everything, including you. Salary is 20% or more below market standards. Performance-based merit increases are really just COLAs (Cost of Living Adjustments) and top performers barely get enough outpace inflation (by ~1% if you’re “exceeding expectations”). Health benefits are subpar and getting worse. Workspaces are second-hand from when Merrill Lynch owned the building in the 90’s and are literally falling apart. During COVID, Charlie doubled his net worth from $5.4B to $10.7B, and DISH’s quarterly earnings rose over 50%…but he still used the pandemic to rationalize huge layoffs, promotion freezes, and cancelling all earned merit increases company wide. Positions open up but are often never backfilled. Instead, the extra workload is just piled on to the remaining team members without increasing their pay. This is a Fortunate 250 company worth billions folks, and that’s not even the half how distastefully cheap it is. Suspect Culture – DISH uses the veil of culture as a way of enforcing questionable company policies while granting itself immunity from all inquiries, compromises, pleas, and criticisms. And if you try anyway, prepare to be visited by the Thought Police. Also prepare to have your performance appraisal tank now that “The DISH Way” is 25% of your score. There are control issues that stem from the very top and seep down into the rest of the company; an unspoken belief that employees cannot be effective unless there are systems in place to monitor and track everything they do. You’ll also hear “opportunity is our #1 benefit” a lot, but this is just the way they spin the disconcerting attrition issue. Opportunity is their #1 benefit because turnover is their #1 problem, and also because everything else they offer is notably below market.

Pros

I love working for a large company that is constantly innovating and exploring new business lines - from satellite TV to smart home to wireless. The fast-paced, startup feel is exciting and challenging. In my experience, there are plenty of opportunities to learn new skills and choose a career path that interests you. Although there is still a lot of improvement that can be made to the company culture, it is encouraging to see some executives really making an effort and implementing meaningful change.

Cons

There are a lot of issues with the culture at DISH, mostly stemming from a lack of trust and emotional intelligence in DISH leadership. It starts in the C-Suite and trickles all the way down through VPs and Directors. We have core hours where we are required to be in the building because we can't be trusted to balance our work and personal lives. We don't have work-from-home options because we can't be trusted to be productive at home. We are micromanaged because we can't be trusted to work autonomously. Many of the leaders (mostly VPs and above) have little ability to effectively manage their emotions and consequently their employees. They are disconnected, vindictive, dominating, and quick to anger. And they are too close-minded to recognize the cultural issues, listen to their employees, and make a real change.
