Pros

The pay is decent, higher than most firms in the area. The lawyers, both partners and associates, are nice to work with and very good at what they do. The office building is top quality, the admins' cubes are spacious and private, and each admin has his or her own printer. There are regularly scheduled technical training sessions, both in-person and online.

Cons

The people with the best skills get all the work and the long hours, but not necessarily the higher pay. Some lawyers can't give their assistants anything remotely complex, because it won't get done correctly. The lawyers then have to find other competent admins in the office to do the work or do it themselves. Often times, the admin they seek out makes less money than their own incompetent assistant, so you end up with lower skilled people enjoying a work/life balance and more money while the highly skilled people do all the work and earn less per hour.

Pros

The benefits are fantastic. Getting time off is typically not an issue so long as you don't take advantage. Very flexible with schedules and understanding family committements.

Cons

The people. There is to much of a caste system present. It's also played into by upper management. If you're not an attorney your value within the company is non-existent. The idea that you are very expendable is a concept you are made very well aware of. Your input doesn't account for much. Qualified or not, for other administrative positions you will typically not be considered unless you're friends with the right person. They don't seem to believe in utilizing people to the fullest of one's capabilities.

Pros

The compensation and benefits you receive there are beyond compare. They pay very well and there were a lot of "perks." The workload kept you busy and the people are pretty decent to work with. I made some really good friends there.

Cons

I really didn't have any until the economy went sour. It then became a place of dread and fear of losing my job. The upper management has no respect for the staff employees. They never took the time to find out what we did all day and therefore made decisions based on little or no information. And they didn't care. They chose favorites and moved forward with no reall indication of the real world outside of their own.
