Decent career transition, but not long-term

Pros

You will probably learn a lot in a short amount of time here and will most likely work on projects that were not part of your original job description. If you are entry-level or looking for a transitionary job, this is a decent spot. You will have consistent work, exposure to other areas of the business, and will probably work with great people who care about the mission of the company. Free daily lunches are healthy and delicious. Healthcare is 100% covered by the company for individuals (you will have to pay if you have dependents, but it is reasonable). Work-life balance is okay because you are typically not expected to work after hours.

Cons

Small business culture is apparent. Almost every little decision runs through the CEO. Company uses several homegrown systems that are outdated and make reporting difficult. Development resources are limited, so requests for enhancements to homegrown systems or existing products must be carefully prioritized. Employee career development is not a priority here. You will be underpaid (if you do not speak up during salary negotiation), your title will be below market standards for your responsibilities, you will not have regular performance reviews or promotion opportunities, and you will not experience any flexibility with your schedule here. Taking breaks other than your designated lunch hour or 10-minute state-mandated break is frowned upon. Getting approval for any UNPAID time off beyond the allowed 10 days paid is very difficult. You will have to listen to background music all day that you do not choose (most of it is neutral but occasionally annoying and distracting). Expect to be micro-managed (most likely by the CEO directly) with little ownership over decisions related to your job. There is currently no formal HR oversight. You are also not permitted to request professional recommendations from others when you leave (only salary and job title can be disclosed by HR).

Pros

Everyone in the office is amazing except for the owners.

Cons

No HR. No one to list your complaints to for the fear of being fired to telling the truth. The owners expect you to do everything to their watch, even if it means staying till 7:30 for no reason because the other person they needed to talk to has already left for the day. No incentives to stay or to be truly invested in what you do. They are petty, don’t respect your time, give you no ownership of anything you do, micromanage every single aspect of your job, treat you like you don't know how to do your job or how to use software that we use on a daily basis, they are insecure and try to always have power over you. Controlled time to take lunch, makes it seem like they shame you if we have lives outside of the office or doctors appointments to go to either. They constantly stop you as you try to leave for the day to have a meeting and they like to take credit for your ideas. No room for growth. No mission, vision, and values. They have such a high turn around, and they seem all friendly upfront, when its day in and day out, its constant fear of being terrorized at your desk in front of the whole office like its ok to do that.

Pros

-The employees are a very bright bunch- the owners have high standards and hire well -The office space is bright, airy and modern and is centrally located in lovely downtown Santa Barbara

Cons

-A healthy work/life balance is not a priority here -You are not awarded for impactful or excellent performance -Breaks are not encouraged -No benefits besides healthcare -Zero snacks -The owners are married and on some days seem to despise each other. None of my business, but it’s kind of a bummer and sets the vibe for the whole company
