Pros

(I wrote this because a prospective employee contacted me wanting to learn more about the company, so I thought I'd share it publicly) I've been working at Dataminr for over a year and I'm very much enjoying it. The backend engineering team is about 20 people, all of them are great to work with. Being a smaller team, I feel like I’ve been able to have a huge impact on the company (~200 employees currently I think). Also the new ideas are always piling up, so there’s a variety of challenges to address. For engineers, the organizational structure is very flat; half of us report to the CTO and half report to the Chief Data Scientist. We’re also grouped into SCRUM teams. We have a team lead and a product manager, but design is up to me and most of my work is self-directed anyway.* I’ll be honest about the state of the engineering: older parts can be pretty bad. Every company has this to some degree I’m sure. Fortunately, I’ve been given free reign to redesign and rewrite things as I see fit. I feel very trusted that I’m writing and testing my code correctly, and I’m able to bring in useful tools to do that with. This has significantly improved the reliability of critical services. After all, if I release bad code, clients who are making serious decisions based on our output will be impacted! That gets at another part of the satisfaction of working here: Dataminr literally saves lives. Though few know it, we have a significant impact on the world because so many major news organizations are using Dataminr to find breaking news. As far as company culture, it’s great. We have happy hours and various themed parties. We regularly have company sports teams playing soccer, kickball, softball, etc, if that’s your thing. It is an open office layout, for better or for worse. We have lunch provided every day as well as a kitchen that’s always well stocked with snacks and food, which means there’s always lots of interaction going on there. I’m friends with a lot of my coworkers and regularly hang out with folks from work outside of the office. tldr: yup, definitely recommend working here *-I actually checked our ticket tracker and over 3/4s of my tickets were ones I created myself.

Cons

Once they ran out of my favorite flavor of protein bar (cookies and cream quest bar) and I had to eat a strawberry one that day instead

Pros

Any job is amazing after this one.

Cons

CEO is nowhere to be found. A sweat shop. Everything is urgent. No time to ever eat lunch or take breaks. They will tell you to make sure to take breaks but then continue to ask for 100 urgent items. Terrible and mean leadership. Just not nice and most people I worked with were miserable and only staying there because of a certain person. I assume there will be a mass exodus upon bonuses. Want to go on PTO? You won't be able to because every meeting is urgent and you'll have to go even when you are OOO. Gross.

I'm disappointed to learn of your experience. I always appreciate employees sharing their perspectives. We provide many opportunities for employees to share their individual experiences, and encourage them to use their voice so that they can effect meaningful change. A perfect example of this is our expanded mental health benefits, increased investment in leadership training and management programs, as well as new, more expansive employee resource groups. We pride ourselves on curating safe spaces for our global team, and encourage people managers to have open dialogue with their team about their evolving needs. If you’re open to it, I would like the opportunity to learn more about your experience and discuss the best path forward for all.

Pros

Awesome perks and benefits, a mostly great staff of highly experienced, smart, and friendly people. Work that is interesting and keeps you engaged all the time. Extremely Fast-paced! Clearly great vision by the company founder that continues to lead the company to success and profitability.

Cons

Some members of the DE leadership simply lack the capacity to translate vision into action. Toxic arrogance at some upper circles of leadership that interferes in their ability to solve problems and listen to ideas. This toxic arrogance created disregard for the impact of false messaging to staff members about company plans. ( In simple words; the day leadership says we are doing great, staff members get nervous, knowing it's the opposite and there will be layoffs soon).

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I trust that formulating this review was not easy and I appreciate your vulnerability. It is disappointing to hear about your unfavorable experience at Dataminr. As a mission-driven organization we pride ourselves on positively impacting the lives of our employees. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of our culture, processes, and interactions. As the VP of DEI, I am in agreement that interrupting the insidious impact of bias and the inequities of discrimination require vigilance and dedication at all levels and we are commtted, as an organization to the eradication of both. We believe wholeheartedly in continuous self-improvement as a part of our DEI journey and I would like to understand your employee experience. I welcome and encourage the opportunity to continue this conversation offline, if you’d be open to it. Best, Robin Strup VP, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion rstrup@dataminr.com
