Pros

Fire Rescue is a fast paced environment and one of the busiest in the country. Many recruits get more experience in 5 years with this department than anywhere else in the region. Staffed with knowledgeable veterans. Newly appointed Chief is a welcome change from past leadership. Training division has been recently empowered to get employees the classes they want to improve.

Cons

County government is extremely bureaucratic. No pay raises in almost seven years. Not an ideal place to live considering inner city poverty in many parts of the county. Desirable places to live are extremely expensive. Many employees want to live close to work but this isn't practical for the given salaries. Many stations are in serious disrepair and need to be renovated or rebuilt.

DeKalb does offer great health and dental benefits.

Cons

However, your take home pay is constantly subjected to furloughs and pay cuts. Also if one is not part of the executive branch there is not much hope for salary increases.

Pros

DeKalb County is close to everything and is great for work life balance. There are some great schools in DeKalb in certain areas. There is the ability to advance and move around if you make the right connections within your department or in other departments around the county.

Cons

The most difficult thing is the compensation. There isn't a fair way of compensating people for their experience and skill sets. There are a lot of inconsistencies from department to department and it makes it difficult to get basic information sometimes.
