Pros

The time off is the major pro for Deccan. 3 weeks vacation to start plus 1 week sick time and 1 Friday off a month. In addition they closed the office for two weeks the past two Christmas holidays and have everyone the time paid. The community service events have been fun too. Lots of fun office events. Coworkers are great. Everyone works as a team for the most part. They're always friendly to each other and enjoy each other's company during events.

Cons

The biggest con is executive management. The micromanaging and distrust begins at the top and filters it's way down through the company. It is widely known that the CEO is moody and expects all employees to have smiles at all times. When she is on vacation the mood in the office lightens significantly. Everyone walks on egg shells. Wondering who will get fired this week. There's a reason there's a staggeringly high turnover rate here. It's because people don't feel appreciated or secure in their jobs. Jamba Juice is nice but doesn't make up for the fact that we aren't trusted to do our jobs. No retirement plan. Below average health benefits. You cannot add a spouse to your benefits. Not flexible at all with scheduling. Everyone has to work 8:30 - 5:30. Except for higher level managers who seem to leave earlier most of the time. Everyone is salary yet is docked for hours missed and not compensated for overtime. The office morale is miserable.

Pros

Deccan does a fantastic job of rewarding employees that work hard and do a good job. Is going 'above and beyond the call of duty' expected from employees? Yes. Is this a place where you can be a clock watcher? No way - not if you want to succeed. But take it from someone who has worked here for more than just a few months - as with almost everything else in life, you reap what you sow! When comparing my job/company with those of my friends, I am more than grateful to be working at Deccan. Deccan does an amazing job of balancing work/life for its employees. We have an amazing amount of paid time off - starting with 3 weeks of paid vacation, a week of sick time, 8 holidays, 12 more days off...not to mention many other days executive management opts to close early, or for the entire day. And while there are times I've had to take a call or answer an email while off - I don't mind since I can do so in my PJ's, from the comfort of my home, and then get back to my day. The only people I know who get MORE time off than us are college students (and they aren't getting paid!). But even on the days I'm at work, it doesn't feel like 'work' to me. Largely because Deccan has an incredible customer base. Fire and EMS personnel are just the best - no one gets into public safety to make millions of dollars, so the folks we serve are in it because it's their calling and they want to be of service to their community. Knowing that I get to assist people who literally lay down their lives for others in the line of duty is a true honor. These are what I call "good people'. Also, because I genuinely like the people I work with -- from executive management to the most junior personnel. Every day someone I encounter at work makes me laugh. I can relate and talk to both coworkers and bosses alike, and I'm comfortable sharing my thoughts/ideas. They might not always be acted upon, but I'm listened to and appreciated, and for that I am thankful. I come to work with a smile, and I leave work with a smile. Having said all of this - I am glad to be a part of the Deccan team, and I have no intention of leaving. I hope whoever is reading this takes to heart all I've had to say, and doesn't let the few disgruntled 'bad apple' comments 'spoil the bunch'. Deccan is a wonderful place and I could not imagine working anywhere else but here.

Cons

Deccan is a small company, so as with many small companies, you have to be comfortable wearing many different hats and shifting priorities on a weekly (or even daily) basis. At times, this can be difficult when you are faced with competing priorities and a limited number of hours in the day. So for those who are looking for a position with predictability as to what their day will look like, and are not comfortable in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, this isn't the place for them.

A Rewarding Place to Work

Pros

I find working at Deccan to be a very fulfilling endeavor. The company is very passionate about the work that is done to build software to assist fire departments in making the best strategic and tactical decisions about where to locate apparatus. As such, we do not just deliver product but have the ability to make a very real difference to citizens in many cities across the country. Working towards this goal is very rewarding. Deccan is a small company that does require employees to be flexible enough to wear a few hats and step in to assist when changing priorities, requirements, and new projects require it. It is not a place full of procedures, rules, and firmly defined structure. I very much enjoy the challenge that comes with one day not being just like the last and a culture that strives to reward those who go the extra mile.

Cons

Due to the importance of the work, it can be stressful at times.
