Pros

I worked here for 6.5 years under the strategic division which focuses on long-term decision support for fire/EMS departments. The work was interesting, with analysts and engineers alike often needing to wear many hats and learn many different skills, and our products felt like it supported a greater good (public safety). In my last three years there, the company underwent an impressive transformation from supporting legacy software to developing cutting edge software in operations research. I think the company has a bright future under the current management and I'm looking forward to checking in with Latha, Raj, and Jon over the next few years to see where the company will be headed. The company is small and the people working there are close and often friends. I was made to feel like family there, both from management and other co-workers and this is what I take away most from my time there. I've had the privilege of meeting some of the smartest people I know there and they've helped me a lot in my career development. For this, I wouldn't change my experience there for anything. The company also offers an excellent PTO structure and good benefits. Pay is not outstanding but competitive for the San Diego area. You are expected to do good work but the supportive nature of the teams will help you succeed if you are struggling.

Cons

Unfortunately, as a smaller company, there is a shorter ceiling in terms of career development compared to larger companies. While the company is growing quickly now, I think some patience will be needed to see the company grow to medium or large sized. Deccan focuses on a niche sector of the technology field (public safety) which is great in terms of job security but limited in terms of total growth potential compared to software/consulting firms focused on wider markets.

Pros

I love working at Deccan. The list of "Pros" is very long, here are a few: - The Fire and EMS industry is interesting and there are always new and exciting projects - The clients are wonderful to work with - The applications we build are amazing and are always improving with the company's focus on R&D - We have talented Engineering and OR Developers that make the R&D a reality. - The company is flexible enough to incorporate client feedback into feature enhancements to our products quickly - The entire team at Deccan is as hard working and dedicated as any I have ever worked with - It is amazing to work with such talented people - The environment is very supportive, we all work together to meet the needs of our clients and I feel we all have an appreciation for the role each person plays in the process -The company is very open to creative ways to solve problems - we are not bogged down by red tape. - The executive team genuinely cares about creating a positive culture - over the years there have been many positive changes and additional perks offered to employees. There is a sense of a 'Deccan Family' and it is very clear that the owners of the company care about the employees and employee satisfaction - Management takes care to think about the strengths and interests of the employees and will make every effort to drive projects/job functions accordingly - The company provides perks above and beyond anything I have experienced: 401K, good insurance, flexible schedule, perk days (a paid day off about every other month - just because), generous vacation, weekly grocery deliveries so the kitchens are stocked with food and supplies, continental breakfast put out for us every day, holiday party/ bonus, the day off on your birthday, etc.

Cons

- The workload tends to come in waves and it can be stressful to get through the times when workload is high - Because we manage to do incredible things with relatively small staff, sometimes there are things that would be great to implement, but there is not enough time or resources to do it as quickly as we would like

Thank you for your post! Very good description of what it's like at Deccan these days. I definitely hear you on the stresses of the ups and downs (mostly the ups) of workloads. As you know, we are in the middle of filling several new positions that should help with that, but in the meantime, we'll be sure to closely monitor the priorities and lean on each other for help and support. Thanks again for your input. jon

Pros

A group of friendly collaborative team. Nice place to develop and use software development skills. Generous HealthCare, 401 k. Extra holiday every month as Perk day. Access to kitchen which has Snacks, Fruits and Coffee.

Cons

Nothing is perfect in the world. But, Management do take your opinions for considerations and do their best to help you. HR is very responsive and ask for suggestions for improvements.
