Pros

Great work/life balance. Plenty of opportunities for career progression and as an engineer you're not locked into a single path. You plan your own career and you're in charge of the moves you want to make.

Cons

Promotions are based on tenure for the first 8-10 years with the company. Performance is not rewarded monetarily even though they preach a pay for performance system. People tend to slip through the cracks by partaking in the politics and receive too much recognition based on extra-curriculars such as event planning rather then focusing on how good an individual is at their job.

30+ Year Career in Dow R&D

Pros

Great depth of technical expertise--can find an answer to almost any technical question from world class experts within the company. Access to any imaginable analysis technique or method. Great spirit of collaboration among the R&D community. From a scientific perspective, this is a great company to work for.

Cons

Overloaded with work processes. This company struggles to convert state-of-the-art science and engineering into viable commercial products. Leadership is always looking for extraordinary huge successes, but lacks the ability to predict winners. It is frustrating because few new product research projects ever generate value for the company or society. Senior leadership is obsessed with unrealistic goals and metrics that divert efforts from work that will produce true value. Also -- be aware that more senior positions will demand your "life". The rating system, decreased staffing levels, and unrealistic growth expectations will dominate all of your waking hours and more. Work/Life balance is nonexistent, especially after you receive a few promotions.
