Pros

Good health insurance, good for resume to have worked at Duke, Not too much oversight or micromanaging. Good for getting foot in the door of clinical research. Good retirement plan but not vested until employed for three years.

Cons

Pay monthly permit to park and then ride shuttle bus to building. No consistency between research teams as far as policies, technology used or office perks. Be aware when hired that many of the benefits Duke touts in their orientation and handbook may not be available to you based on your manager's decision of if they want to utilize them or not. Some teams are in an office building and are able to work remotely or work flex schedules while other teams are work in the basement of the hospital with no flexibility. Pay is below industry standard for similar work and experience. Reg position is very dull and research teams are chronically understaffed. Teams seem to have a handful of employees that stay 10-20 years while all other staff turnover fairly quickly.

Pros

You are able to get a lot of experience with difficult cases such as with patients that other hospitals are unable to take / refuse to do surgeries on. My floor has a great atmosphere in which we all work very well together. My management and coworkers are amazing and have allowed the transition from new grad to CNII smooth and encouraging. Also many people are not from in state which allows you to make a lot of friends who may be new to the area too.

Cons

Pay is not competitive in the area. They say you are getting underpaid because you are able to use Duke on your resume. Sometimes billing and money is placed over care of individual patients.
