Pros

Come and go as you please.

Cons

There is no ceiling. All your hard work means nothing unless you are hand picked to succeed. They constantly threaten you with lay- offs unless you cross train but they purposefully keep people from gaining marketable skills so that you can't find a job any where else. I repeatedly asked to cross train in other depts. to avoid being "laid-off", and to break up the never ending drudgery in mine. The response from management is positive at first, then as soon as you start training they come up with excuses to keep you from training. I'm told extra samples came in that you need to work on first, or they don't say anything and then talk behind your back about how you're purposefully avoiding doing work in your own dept. Then they actually hired part-time people to train in depts. I wanted to cross- train in. Unbelievable. They would rather waste time and money on part-time people they can "lay-off" on a whim then let full-time people gain additional skills. You cannot win unless you have the manager wrapped around your finger. You cannot afford all the so-called benefits they offer on a lab analysts salary either. They hire the fewest people possible to work in their labs so everyone (except managers or supervisors in the lab I work in) is constantly working at frenzied pace. Nobody cares about the quality of their work because it's never ending. They just want to get it done and go home. Corporate scrapes the bottom of the barrel for managers and don't even follow their own rules for who can qualify to be one, like having a PhD or managerial SKILLS. Corporate needs to hire actual managers that have proven themselves through hard work and earning the respect of others. Instead the title and salary is given to people because they're older than everyone else or have been there the longest.
