An Unsafe and Unhappy Place to Work

Business Outlook

Pros

Some of the people I worked with were very nice.

Cons

Lax safety standards, zero safety training for new hires, frequent asbestos exposure, broken fume hoods still being used, reluctance to replace HEPA filters and other safety features, expired fire extinguishers, improper hazardous waste disposal, low morale, incompetent managers, motivation by threats, micro-managing by corporate, good employees are overworked while others do the minimum, low pay, yearly raises are 1-2% for the hardest workers.

Pros

The owner is very smart.

Cons

This company is successful because of its business model, but it is because of its business model so many employees are dissatisfied. Management is almost robotic in their responses for approving expenses and spending money. They purchase a lot of their equipment and furniture at auctions from other labs who went out of business. They get everything for pennies on the dollar. They brag about it. They claim they use the savings to invest it back into company and expand operations. But that is where it will stay. They treat the employees the same way. You will not see that come back in the form of bonuses or raises. There is no guarantee raises are given and if you get one its only 2% at the most. Their 401k is only a company contribution NOT a company match, which is barely anything at all. Its a joke. The company contribution towards health is only $154 no matter what type of plan you enroll in. You have to cover all of the rest. It is very expensive. Bad weather? Take a sick day or come in. They do not close. They will do anything to not pay you for time off without work. Reminders constantly about how to save money. Turn off your lights. Scale back on utilities. Stay billable at all times. No overtime (but get your work done anyway) They do not spend any money they don't absolutely have to. There is just a vibe that cutbacks are necessary. Perhaps they really can't afford it. Perhaps its the difference of staying in business and going out of business. Doesn't benefit employees other than a basic paycheck. Maybe thats all one wants anyway.
