Pros

great and helpful co-workers learn a lot within a couple of months tasks not too repetitive, though you are expected to spend half your day counting spores on a microscope

Cons

manager is very dishonest. they will talk with you and attempt to be personal with you, and praise you for good work. then out of the blue, they call you into their office and fire you. no warnings prior and a vague reason. training evaluation for counting spores has no statistical integrity. they compare your results to just one analyst who only covers a portion of the slide, so the extreme variance in unaccounted for e.g. original analyst counted 20 basidiospores, trainee correctly identifies triple the amount but fails anyway short lunch and can't take paid break whenever you'd like, it has to be at the manager's convenience. there were many days I could not use my morning break due to the manager giving me ton of work, and I can't make it up in the afternoon as that break would be too close to my 2nd break if that's not enough, there is high turnover for a reason: very rare to find someone who lasts over a year

Pros

For the most part, I enjoyed the people I worked with. I was given the opportunity to train on additional pieces of equipment and receive a modest raise with each skill I acquired. There was a lot of opportunity to work overtime, and it was unofficially required during the busy season.

Cons

The pay wasn't very good. You were required to work overtime in order to make a decent living. The lab was somewhat unprofessionally run, with a lot of gossip negatively affecting the workplace environment. There was a lot of unprofessional behavior, overall, that was allowed to take place.

Treat good employees like garbage...completely disposable.

Pros

I did get 2 promotions and fought for reasonable wages. Most are hourly employees so overtime is accrued. Vacation time was reasonable but in the smaller labs taking time off meant huge trouble for production.

Cons

Nepotism is the company moto. It took 2 years for the sample receiving area to get a hood for accepting asbestos samples. I watched lab techs work in unsafe conditions completely untrained with no qc being performed. Quality is not favored, it is all about quantity. Asbestos analysts were expected to analyze well over 125 samples per day. Benefits are deplorable. The HR manager just so happens to be married and related to all most of management so the is no safe haven for airing grievances.
