Pros

The best thing about exp is the people I work with. They are really more like part of my extended family than co-workers. Having worked here for almost 21 years I (we) have watched each others children grow and start their own families; supported each other when a family member has passed away; and have shared a toast to co-workers that we have lost along the way.

Cons

Being such a large company, there are times when there appears to be a disconnect between the Corporate Office and the offices. Part of this I feel is also a cultural disconnect as Corporate is in Canada and many of the other offices are in the United States.

Pros

Company went through a lot of changes during my time there. Overall a very friendly environment among co-workers. They invested a lot in training new people out of school and putting them in position to advance their skills quickly. Very good reputation which allowed you to work on good name projects, not commodity work.

Cons

Very limited advancement. Of the 15-20 engineers hired out of school in a 3 year span when I started only 2 or 3 remain. Most people develop their skills and then leave for better pay or career opportunities.

Pros

The managers I’ve worked with have a hands-off approach. Self-reliant people are rewarded and stay on board, others don’t. By and large, people are friendly and helpful. There’s a wide variety of assignments. The company has engineers working in many different disciplines – electrical, architectural, civil, etc.

Cons

Training is not provided, and new employee guidance is very limited. There are support teams but they are stretched very thin. Staff are on their own and expected to answer each others’ questions. The work/life balance needs improvement. 50 to 60 hour work weeks are common. Overtime is not allowed. Some tasks must be done in the evening to avoid disrupting production work. Management’s answer is to have staff come in late or leave early to compensate, but that’s not realistic; the work keeps piling up.
