Pros

Opportunities to work on hands on with some awesome tech.

Cons

If you are looking for this kind of employment opportunity then you are also likely smart enough to see through the recent flurry of 5 star reviews. Contrary to their intention, they offer an insight in to the desperate, toxic culture that exists. The key engineers who built the company up into a world leader have gone, most due to the CEO and his increasingly erratic nature ( a quick Google search will tell you all you need to know about him and his opinions). Those who remain do so due to loyalty to the customers they have worked closely with for years, though in truth most are actively looking elsewhere also.

Pros

Lots of freedom, travel, etc etc.

Cons

That freedom comes with a healthy dose of responsibility and an expectation that you will manage yourself with minimal feedback. In practice, that means you don't know you're on the wrong track until it's too late, then you get blamed for everything. An extremely gross and toxic work culture - one so bad that the State AG filed a massive lawsuit against them for discriminatory practices - just Google the company name and/or its CEO Peter Zieve and you'll get a taste of what went down there. Being paired with more decent people is a complete luck of the draw. The company was shielded from the more normal financial constraints of the business world for a long time because of a high barrier to entry into the market. However, that seems to be changing more and more, and a company that was used to throwing money around now finds itself tightening its belt. Things have gotten ugly. Pay cuts, suspension of bonuses, etc. Major business decisions have increasingly fallen on a reckless CEO who is clearly out of his element, shielded from consequences by decades of prosperity for which he can't really claim much credit in creating. The company's misguided sense of "we're not like the other guys" means they refuse to take in outside talent for upper management, and as the old guard dwindles, a more and more prominent succession crisis makes itself known. I strongly recommend that Engineers looking for work avoid this place at all costs.

A place that is changing a lot

Pros

This place is a good opportunity to gain experience as a junior engineer, and it comes with a lot of perks you wouldn't get at other places, like use of facilities for personal use after hours, and tons of autonomy to do what you think is necessary on the job. Most of the people here are great to work with, and there is an emphasis on doing the job right. If you are talented and can handle the environment, you will be recognized. One caveat is that your experience will vary greatly depending on what kind of engineer you are and what technology group and project you get placed to upon being hired. This applies to everything: advancement, on the job learning, pay, work culture. You could either get put on a high profile project with chances to learn and stand out(big raises), or you could be turning bolts for years as a glorified laborer. Switching teams or projects is very tough and gets you put on the bad list.

Cons

Management, compensation, raises. Peter, the CEO, has always been a outspoken on his political and genealogical views, but the covid pandemic and 2020 election really made him go off the deep end. Every day is bring your politics to work day at EI now, which really hurt morale and led to good people quitting. The business model here is to essentially hire new engineers for cheap and work them for a few years till they move on. Nothing wrong with this by itself, but the mentoring and oversight of new engineers is not always good. This has led to tons of big mistakes and money wasted when a new guy messes up. Makes projects lose money, not good. No raises for who knows how long now. Peter whining that he can't retain workers and blaming political/economic reasons for this. Braindead response from management to low morale and high attrition. No profit, so no profit share.
