Pros

I enjoyed working at Anthem, despite some of the cons I'll list below. The annual bonus was decent (when the company met it's numbers), stock options are given for those who are Executive Advisors and above and they can be worth some money (again, if the company does well). I enjoyed my team, the work I did, the culture of the company, the mentoring, etc. It was a company I planned on spending my career at, but obviously things didn't work out as I expected.

Cons

Here's why I left...They implemented a "Workplace Strategy", which sought to get remote workers into strategic locations. This caused a lot of talent to leave the company, because people didn't want to go to Indianapolis, Atlanta, etc. They then backfilled these positions will local people, many of which were less talented than those who left (less talented, also means they can be paid less!). Anthem's compensation model is outdated. They pay salaries based on the region of the country in which you live, not based on the skill or value you bring to the company. Imagine finding out the people in lower positions are making more money than you, solely because of where they live. This was a big issue for me (and others), as I was always told how valuable I was, but that value didn't mean they wanted to pay me more. Words don't pay the bills. When hired your position has an MRP (Market Reference Point), which denotes the salary range for your position associated with where you live. HR's goal is to keep people at the mid-point on the MRP or below. So let's say the MRP for your position is $70K-$100K, their goal is to keep your salary at or below $85K, and your manager will tell you, "We have to get you promoted before I can pay you more", and getting promoted can take more than 18 months from start to finish. Raises of 2% or less are common, even as a top performer with "Exceeds Expectations" performance reviews. In the end, they say they value you, but they don't show it. Their initiatives and practices end up making good people leave, it's just a matter of time.

Flexible, but no longer

Pros

I have been working at Anthem since 2016. * Managers give associates autonomy to complete a task * Flexible work schedule * Actuarial study program gives very generous study hours.

Cons

* Management has "mystery firings" in which they lay off 5-25 actuaries each quarter and no longer announce it. * Company is trying to eliminate Work From Home and force associates to move thousands of miles across the US to one of four "hub" offices. * Complete lack of transparency from upper management * Underachieving associates lie about workload and get promoted. * Company eliminated petty cash budgets for offices to hold fun, after work events a few times a year.

Pros

- My manager, and her manager, and that person's manager, seem to really care about their teams and it shows. - VP's and above are strong players and interested in communicating their initiatives, which is a great learning experience for other associates. - Pay is fair for work/life balance expectations. - Very nice bonus if your business is doing well (of course still nothing like finance/tech sectors) - Colleagues are very nice, generally foster a supportive environment where people help each other within and outside their team. - Last but not least, work at home. This is the single best thing about working here.

Cons

- Managers are so busy it seems like they just pass down initiatives from above without being able to (or wanting to) think it through, challenge assumptions, or scrutinize to find the best solution. This can be very frustrating for those stuck doing the work and then having to undo or justify the bad results that were foreseeable. - Very hierarchical corporate environment where you can't expect to share the same rarified air as those above your manager's level much less speak up anytime they are in a meeting or email thread. I've been asked to vet basic emails by my manager before sending them to someone above her level. What a waste of time. - Environment is stifling to innovation because there are so many long-time (think 15 years+) employees here who are stuck in their rut. On the flip side, there are way too many executive-led reorgs so that the "fundamentals" change wildly every few years while the stuff that should be easy to change won't change because of people's routines. Very strange limbo we're in. - Too many paper-pushing administrative tasks required by HR. From the time-consuming trainings to quarterly performance review requirements and career profiles, it seems unnecessary. - Spectre of layoffs looming with Cigna merger, while departments are still reeling from the reorgs of 2014-2015. When will it end?!?!
