Pros
Depending on your lab, can be a very flexible work environment, as long as the work gets done. The more ambitious people in these positions don't tend to stick around too long- either med school or grad school or something else. Good benefits and vacation policy.
Cons
HR is notoriously stingy and you really have to fight for pay increases. They will try and start you as low as possible and usually annual raises barely keep up with inflation. Your real chance for a pay hike it a change in job title- ask for it when it makes sense strategically.
