Pros

Great pay when and if you can work.

Cons

Getting laid off all the time! When you come back to work you have to work eight weeks before insurance kicks in and then you get laid off again!!! This has been going on for three years. I am a professional driver. I have a family and a rather large mortgage. I have worked two days in the past two weeks. I am sitting by the phone waiting for a load all the time. I have been there for ABF when they called but where are they now? I am sure another lay off is in the works. Who can live like this? Why did you hire me for a full time job if you are going to treat me like a casual/temp employee. I feel used and very dissatisfied with ABF at this time. Where is the turn around Mr. Davidson has talked about? Where is the overnight freight? Where is my life???

Pros

Low stress environment. No cost Healthcare benefits. An amazing Defined Benifit Pension. Terrific Company to work for.

Cons

Working on a cold dock in the Winter with do doors. Some workers that don’t appreciate the benifits of working under a Teamster contract.

Pros

Pay is best in the business. $100,000+ first year as a road driver. Year two I made $107,000… and took two months off for cancer surgery. Year three I made $129,000. I average 2-3 nights per week in a hotel. Usually only 1 night out then back home the next day. Frequently running turns (home at end of the run). Insurance is free and EXCELLENT coverage. I paid $1,000 total out-of-pocket for cancer surgery.

Cons

Not much life/work balance. Frustrating spending time on the extra board waiting to get a call to go to work, but with more seniority you get less wait time.
